  • Inconsistency
  • Not focused on improving product or service
  • Don’t bond with their customers
  • Don’t focus on online marketing
  • Afraid of trying new things

In recent years, we have all seen how important your website is to your business and what amazing benefits digital transformation can offer. Good exposure of business, better connectivity with customers, finding new potential customers and best of all, cost effectiveness. As a result of this global epidemic, all of us realized the true power of online business. The internet makes business possible, but it can also be a challenge to make the transition. Creating a website takes hours of research, brainstorming sessions with a web developer or an agency, and the most important thing-time. Yes folks, time. Growing an online business takes time. To provide your customers with better content, you have to nurture it, provide the right strategies, and update your website regularly. This is where the issue lies. This is something that many startups, small and medium business owners fail at. Websites are created, ads are run, and after a few weeks or months, when they start getting some business, stop. This is the mistake that most of the small/ medium business owners make.

As a business owner, especially a startup or small/medium business owner, you should update your website regularly not only to remain fresh in customers’ minds but also for search engines. Yes, search engines love websites that are consistently updated. You can choose to update your website content weekly or monthly but the key is, you have to do it regularly.

Not Focused On Improving Product or Service

A business needs consistency, not only in website updates but also in product/services. A business is nothing without a good product/service. That’s why it is imperative that you should also improve your product/service. Here’s what you can do to avoid this common business owners’s mistake:

  • Coordinate with your customer care team/person to know the flaws of your product/service.
  • Set a time line to upgrade your product/service and release the upgraded product/service to a small group of audience for testing and gather the data about the product and keep on upgrading it till the time you are confident enough to launch in a full fledged way.
  • Ask for feedback about your product/service from your customers.
  • Any shortcoming in your product, or anything that could cause problems for your customers, acknowledge it and explain the resolution on your website. If you wish, you can also email your customers with this information. It’s better to offer the solution up front rather than wait until they find it and then face difficulties.

Don’t Bond With Their Customers

This is one another and super important reason why most businesses fail. They don’t bond with their customers and the main reason is, they do not spend time understanding their customers’ journey. I know every customer is different but for a specific industry, they follow a similar pattern. In marketing, this pattern is known as the sales funnel. It may vary slightly from business to business, but most of the time, it is the same. You need to understand this, your customers are looking for a solution to a problem and you need to present your product/service in such a way that it could display the required solution and this presentation depends on which stage of the sales funnel your customers are at. Before launching your website or updating it, have a discussion with your marketing or sales team/person and try to understand their journey. Here are some tips that will help you to avoid this mistake that most of business owners make:

  • Ask your sales team or marketing person/team about what all questions your customers asked in the last 6 months and make a list of these questions
  • Try to answer these questions on the home page of your website or create a separate section or page for these questions under FAQs.
  • Try to understand why your potential customers are not ending up taking your product/services. For example, if you find that they are looking for a good price, offer them some discount or cashback. If they are looking for value, offer them freebies, additional services or a trial period.

Don’t Focus On Online Marketing

Let’s face it ladies and gentlemen, online marketing has become an essential part of almost every business on the face of this earth. Every small, medium, big business is now looking for ways to go digital. But, even though they are going digital, still they are not emphasizing on their marketing strategy. In my experience, every business needs a customized marketing strategy to cater to their customers. But most of them are still applying old strategies. I am not saying that those strategies are worthless. All I am saying is that you also have to find new strategies while using old ones. You need to understand, the world has changed and so are your customers. They are not searching in the same way as they used to do it a couple of years ago. Now, most of them use Google Assistant, Alexa or Voice search, use long tail keywords and sentences to search, engaging more with graphical content as compared to text content. Just like your website and product/services, your marketing strategies also need to be upgraded.

Here are some tips:

  • Use social media marketing to promote your new offers, discounts or new product launches
  • Use PPC ads to target popular keywords
  • Use graphic ads to grab the attention of new customers
  • Remarket
  • Most importantly, try the combinations of the above.

Afraid of trying new things

It may not sound so nice but it’s the harsh truth. People are afraid of trying new things when it comes to digital marketing. Something is working for you it doesn’t mean other won’t work at all. I have worked with many clients with the same mindset and been proven wrong later. When it comes to digital marketing or business growth in general, you gotta try new strategies, methods to stand out from the competition. You may fail a couple of times, results may not meet your expectations but every trial gives you something very important- Data. You can use the data to analyze what went wrong and what you could have done better. Never be afraid of trying new things. Failure is the part of future success.

I hope this helps. Happy Marketing!
