How to find keywords that increase traffic on the website using Google Keyword Planner tool?


As a long-time user of the Google Keyword Planner tool, I’ve been able to effectively optimize my clients’ websites and PPC campaign strategies. In this article, I am going to share some basic steps that will help small and medium business owners, digital marketing beginners and start-up owners to use this tool and make most of out of it.

Google offers this free tool that helps you to find niche-specific and trending keywords, so you know what your potential clients may be searching for.

With that being said, let’s start.

  1. Log in to your Google Ad account and go to the Google Keyword Planner tool.
  2. Click on ‘Discover New Keywords’ and enter your niche specific keyword. You can add 1 or 2 keywords but I recommend adding at least 3-4 different keywords. For example, you are a store owner that sells women clothes, then you can enter Jeans for women, Women’s T-Shirts and Designer tops for ladies. This will help with finding all possible keywords that are relevant for your business along with the variations.
  3. You can select the country, language and date from the top. Please choose the country and language that you want to target and select the data for 6 months or 12 months. I usually see the results for the last 6 months but you can choose 12 months or more.
  4. Sort the ‘Avg. Monthly Searches’ from high to low.
  5. Now, you have to look for keywords that have low or medium competition and make a list of these keywords
  6. Now you have to write content around these keywords. I recommend focusing on one keyword per content. Please be careful about grammar and spelling mistakes as it may affect the user experience.
  7. Don’t forget to add niche specific call-to-actions like contact now, call us, order now, etc in the content.
  8. Post it on the website and wait for at least 1 week for the result. After a week or so, check the results and optimize the content.
